Foundations
The bold construction work of convicts and the fine detailing of colonial architect Francis Greenway are laid bare in the corner. The solid sandstone foundations were built on clay and stone, which handmade bricks forming footings and walls. All surfaces were lime washed. The elegant arched window openings and walls had timber 'bricks' inserted during, construction for attaching architraves and skirtings. Under the floors lived the rats. Their tireless work of tunnelling and nest building is shown below in this replica ‘ratacomb’. Strange formations like this were exposed when floors were removed in the late 1970s and during later excavations.
