Early layers
The timber box structure in this corner is one of the building's earliest interior features. Suspended inside are the weights of the barracks clock, which travel down from level 3.
The lime washed boarding fitted by convicts was covered with lath and plaster in 1848. The wall around the door shows layers of paint over cow-hair plaster. By the late 1840s most of this room was coloured charcoal grey. The lime washed brick edge of the original doorway can be seen to the left. Similar door openings have been restored on narrower timber doorway and decorated architraves were added after 1886.
