Fireplaces
The exposed layers of paint and plaster on this chimney show the history of this room. These visible fireplaces survived from the buildings three main phases of occupation. A large opening from 1819 is framed by lime washed bricks and a heavy sandstone mantle. The arched brickwork of a smaller fireplace installed in 1848 reduced the size of the original opening. After 1887 the fireplace opening was squared off for a more compact and efficient coal grate.
